The presentation will share good practice regarding the use of the arts in education - particularly with disaffected young people in the system. This is now recognized as a major global problem. We will highlight successful initiatives we have developed to counteract disaffection, and to ensure that young people can reflect on their lifestyles and expectations in a positive and empowering milieu. We will explore the theory, methodology, and practice of such initiatives. We will demonstrate how they can be effective, and share a range of quality resources that participants can use or adapt in their own educational settings. We will stress the need for creativity and involvement by students in their self-education, both across the standard Curriculum and in alternative learning environments, giving hands-on guidance in areas where participants may be unfamiliar or unresourced.
