Myriam Ojeda-Patiño was born in Colombia, South America. Studied Latin American folklore and urban dance at the Instituto Popular de Cultura, Colombia, graduating in 1991. During this time she also co-founded Danza Experimental de Cali and studied Philosophy at La Universidad del Valle receiving her degree in 1992. In 1993 she left Colombia and came to Britain. She studied for 3 years at a full-time Dance and Choreography diploma course at Lewisham College. In 1994 Myriam established artLAT - Arte Latino Cultural Project -in London, the project was funded by Awards for All (lottery money) with a view to developing and fostering Latin American dance projects in the UK. In 1998 Myriam conceived, co-produced and performed in Danza Colombia! which was the first visit to the UK of a professional Colombian dance company.
During 1997 and 2000 Myriam made several site-investigations, travelling to Colombia, Argentina and Cuba to do research on literature, theatre and dance and to establish an international network of artists. In London she devised, wrote and directed La Casa de los Buendia inspired by the novel ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude, an Interdisciplinary site-specific performance with dance-theatre as its main component. The project brought together more than 20 performers from diverse disciplines and attracted local funds from several funding bodies including London Arts Board, Leaders of London Awards and from the Colombian Ministry of Culture which also supported the Colombian based Danza Experimental de Cali to perform at the event.
Other artistic achievements have been the participation in Madonnas film EVITA and the choreography for DANCE, a film commissioned by channel 4. She also collaborated with Deborah Bulls BBC dance season programme, Travels with my Tutu. In March/April 2000 Myriam was invited by the Argentinean visiting dance company Tango por Dos to perform in their spring season at the Peacock Theatre.
Myriam received her MA Choreography Degree in 2001 from Middlesex University. She also teaches Argentinean Tango at independent dance centres in London and elsewhere in the UK and has been invited to teach at tango clubs in Europe and recently visited Hong Kong teaching tango invited by the local tango club. She co-choreographed and dance in Subitango, concert performance touring production running since 2001, in collaboration with Tango Siempre music quartet touring The UK and Ireland. In 2004 Myriam conceived and directed Tiempo de Tango. a multimedia performance fusing contemporary dance and tango. Its national tour received financial support from the Arts Council of England.
In the last 18 months Myriam has been researching carnival culture and mask work with a view to develop new work for 2006. She recently trained in Colombia, Peru and Argentina. Myriam will be performing in Colombia’s biggest carnival event in February 2006. Myriam received in 2006 a grant award from the Arts Council of England to produce and tour her new production Romance D'Carnaval.
