"The New Jazz Program at Tshwane University of Technology - South Africa"

 

Roland Moses 

Roland Moses completed his M.Mus (cum laude) in Jazz Performance, Composition and Arranging at the University of Natal in 2001. He attended Goteborg University in Sweden as part of a student exchange program in the same year.  Notable performance achievements include winning the National Jazz Group categories of the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters Competition and incentive prizes at the Samro Piano Competition.

 

Roland was selected as the pianist/composer/arranger for the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band. They have performed at numerous jazz festivals including the Joy of Jazz, Awesome Africa, North Sea Jazz Festival – Cape Town, Holland.

 

He lectured at the University of Natal; Durban Institute of Technology; Tshwane University of Technology specialising in Instrumental, Performance, Improvisation teaching.

 

He has developed and facilitated several Community music projects and conducts music literacy workshops in underprivileged areas in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng. 

 

Roland has also served as an external examiner at the University of Natal; University of Venda; University of Pretoria. He is currently supervising two Masters students.

 

Roland Moses is currently a lecturer and program co-ordinator at the Tshwane University of Technology, School of Performing Arts. He is engaged in Doctoral studies on a music literacy program for church musicians.

 

Presentation Overview

The School of Performing Arts was formed in 1985 comprising of Light Music, Drama, Opera, Classical, Theatre craft. The School of Performing Arts and School of Fine Arts united to form the Faculty of Arts. The Light Music section was changed to the School of Music.

In October 2003, Technikons were re-designated Universities of Technology by the Minister of Education.  Tshwane University of Technology was established on 1 January 2004, with the merging of the former Technikon Northern Gauteng, Technikon North-West and Technikon Pretoria.  In 2007, the School of Performing Arts was formed, this department comprised of Jazz and Popular Music, Vocal Art, Musical Theatre and Dance. In the same year, the Department of Education  financed the relocation of the school of music from the science campus to the arts campus; build a new library and Film School.

This paper will trace the development of the Jazz and Popular music program from its inception to current status at TUT. It will explore the trajectory from ‘Technikon’ to ‘University of Technology’ and discuss the process of re-curriculation, africanisation and the relocation of the School of music to the new specialised facilities at the Arts campus.
