A monodrama on the life of the outstanding Black actor: Ira Aldridge

 

Shango Baku

Shango Baku is an international actor, writer, director and journalist. He has worked in the UK, Caribbean, South America and Africa. As Artistic Director of CETTIE (Cultural Exchange Through Theatre In Education), he writes, directs and produces a wide range of events for the Company. This year’s production focuses on the celebrated Black actor, Ira Aldridge, with performances at The Old Vic Theatre in London, the Edinburgh Festival, and the V & A Museum.

Presentation Overview

• Overview of the importance of culture and interaction in education. Description of CETTIE’s involvement and intervention in international education using drama as a key for inclusion, and for dealing with sensitive issues of equality and global citizenship.
• Talk about the Ira Aldridge Bicentenary Project - a unique example of heritage recovery and accreditation
• Show a short, edited film on the legacy of Aldridge
• Perform the play "Splendid Mummer" by Lonne Elder
• Remaining in character, the actor will field questions on the life of Ira Aldridge

• Dissemination of quality Resources to participants

The presentation will be designed to show how education can be enriched and made accessible through the use of creative strategy; how cross-sector initiatives can broaden the scope and depth of learning initiatives; how a single project can be layered and timed to maximize its relevance and impact on the widest range of audiences.The aim would be to share CETTIE’s vision of education in the 21st century: a dynamic interplay of information, action and imagery, capable of giving the widest perspective to its theme and subject, and supported by long-term resources for development by schools, museums, theatres, libraries, and community venues.
