"Oxymoron"

 

Yulia Sulima

Yulia Sulima is a theatre director. In 2006 she graduated from Kyiv National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television. In 2005 she founded a theatre studio. Yulia Sulima Theatre Studio is unifying creative young people up to 35 years old and all of them have different stage experience. There are mimes, a musician, a choreographer and painters. Such wide range of opportunities allows experimenting with the theatrics. The theatre has been turning to the traditional playwrights - Shakespeare, Lorca, Bulgakov, Gogol, Bunin, Bekket, Harms as well as to modern authors. In addition, the theatre has been creating projects based on the modern drama.

Performance "Oxymoron"

“Oxymoron” project was formed on the basis of modern theatre and acting techniques. The theatre is oxymoron in itself, the embodiment of that witty nonsense in art, as all the elements that have conflict within are the best material for playing on stage. Moreover, game is the best way of perception. Nowadays the world is not incomprehensible anymore, it is covered with the network of information and transport means. But still, we did not become closer to each other, we did noy get to know each other better. The news from battlefield is told between commercials and soap operas – our hearts don’t notice those events. We do not hear the message ‘death is here’ between mottos ‘no more spots!’, ‘no more sweat!’. Thus we do not notice how our feelings die, those that make us dream, love, create. They leave only an envelope, which is able to consume. On the analogy of it, in the theatre we have a mask without live face. Faceless mask – oxymoron.

We meet in the improvisation, we play and perceive, and through this we give birth to the organic whole – to the theatre, that touch the audience in the dialogue and turns into united creation fusion on stage. And this fusion is the play. Every time it is different as every time we see each other we get to know something new. However, every play is the wonder of reincarnation. The action that the audience sees depends on the character that gives life to the mask. And the audience watches the world of reality’s reflections as if through a magnifier. Still, reality doesn’t cross the borders of game, everything on the stage being serious depends only on the individual perception. This is the good way to imagine unthinkable.

The world of the future is the world of the fantasy, and you can get there only if you got over the inertia of today. Theatre performance is one of the ways to do this leap. If a spectator gets over the borders of the possible in his mind, he would be able to do this in reality. We strive not for the reflection of an event on stage, but for its reincarnation, using improvisation. All we do on stage if an intellectual fight with any frozen shape of today, with inactivity, unconsciousness, death…The best way to change the future is to create it.
